The New York Times dubbed Serena Williams “Dangerous when interested“.

This week in Miami, she was really interested in winning the Sony Ericsson Open and was thus dangerous, quite easily drubbing her opponents, mowing down the world numbers one, three and four to claim her fifth Miami title.

Serena now ties with tennis great Steffi Graff’s record of having won the same number of times in the tournament, after she claimed the title in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007 before.

“I love Steffi Graf. She’s a great champion and was my role model. To even be compared to her is awesome,” Williams told the media after her victory over Jankovic.

So the question now is, will she be keen on going through all the drudgery of playing the warm-up games to the French Open so that she could increase her chances of capturing the championship once again in Roland Garros? Or will she spend her time focused on getting married? After all, she has already won on Paris’ clay before, so it’s not like she is dying to add that trophy to her mantle. And dirt is not one of her favorite surfaces either.

But who knows what’s going to happen next with Serena?

Perhaps we should just be glad that she takes time out once in a while to show us great tennis and we should stop begrudging her laissez-faire attitude and just enjoy those moments when she does play, rather than question her commitment and why she does not put in as much time as the other players.

The girl only plays part-time but she is still ranked world number eight, with her ranking likely to improve with her triumph today. This compared to all the others who grind in tournament after tournament and are still ranked lower than her. Makes one wonder about the standard of women’s tennis, if Serena and her sister, Venus, could so easily thrash others even on their part-time schedule.

Serena might be American but she is not obsessed with chasing titles or rankings, which is actually a refreshing change. She is now truly playing only for the love of the game and isn’t that the best reason to keep playing?
