This tennis season just gets more and more intriguing as it goes deeper underway.

Both the sport’s men’s and women’s games are in a deep flux these days. Just disregard rankings and seedings. Seeded players have been mercilessly swept aside by lesser-ranked competitors at an alarming rate in tournaments everywhere this year.

Top players, such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Justine Henin, having thus far been shadows of their former dominant selves, had not been able to assert the tennis order that had been the norm in the last few years. Which gives rise to the possibility of players lower down the ladder getting their chance to shine, if they shrewdly took advantage of the situation and seized the opportunity.

The biggest shock of the day came from the women’s side.

31-year old mum Lindsay Davenport’s comeback looked promising after she demolished world number two Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-2 in round three of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Ivanovic, who won the Indian Wells championship a week ago, could find no weapons in her arsenal to combat Davenport’s aggressive returns and forays to the net.

Her early exit echoes her Serbian counterpart Novak Djokovic, who also raised the winner’s trophy in Indian Wells but was shown the door by South African qualifier Kevin Anderson in the second round of the same tournament.

Davenport modestly played down her big win. “In this comeback, for lack of better words, I’ve not made a fool of myself. I’ve done pretty well for my age and for what I’ve been through. Obviously days like today just give me more incentive to keep going,” the triple Grand Slam title winner told the media.

Other seeded female players who fell today included Daniela Hantuchova, Patty Schnyder and Amelie Mauresmo. On the men’s side, big names which were eliminated in the early rounds of this tournament so far included David Ferrer, Andy Murray and Lleyton Hewitt.

What is going to happen next in Miami? What about the rest of the year? What a delight it will be to watch as the drama unfolds.
