The first in 2004 was to break the curse. This time, the victory is to solidify Boston’s resurgence and dominance in the pantheon of baseball. Fans are probably only too relieved that they don’t have to wait another 86 years for the Red Sox to win another World Series. Whew!

What a series it has been, with the Red Sox sweeping the title in four straight games, never looking at any point like they would give the Colorado Rockies much of a chance. The Rockies are a great team but they were just out-classed by a talented and magnificent team.

And the Red Sox dominance looks set to continue, as their long-time rivals, the New York Yankees, seem to be in disarray. The Yankees’ star player, Alex Rodriguez, has just announced that he won’t be staying on with them, potentially walking away from $91 million on the three years left of his 10-year contract. Rodriguez is said to be in line to win his third Most Valuable Player award this year. This comes on the heels of veteran Yankees manager Joe Torre’s recent decision to walk away from a new one-year contract with the team, after Yankees owners tried to tie his salary with the team’s performance, effectively dealing him a pay-cut.

For now, Boston should just revel in its victory – the whole rivalry business can take a backseat to the celebrations. They say the best revenge is to live well. What sweet revenge it is for the Red Sox and all their fans!
